Canada's AI innovators

Variational AI featured in AWS’s “Canada’s AI Innovators” series

AWS has named Variational AI one of nine companies in its Canada’s AI Innovators series — a spotlight on Canadian organisations using artificial intelligence to solve some of society’s hardest problems, from wildfire detection to microplastic pollution to drug discovery.

In the featured video, Co-Founder and CEO Handol Kim explains why drug discovery is overdue for reinvention. Today it takes 10–12 years and hundreds of millions of dollars to bring a single drug to approval, with roughly a 10% probability of success once a candidate reaches human trials. The deeper bottleneck, Handol argues, isn’t biology — it’s the slow, one-molecule-at-a-time process of early discovery itself.

Reimagining discovery as a generative problem

Variational AI’s core insight was that drug discovery could be approached the way modern AI generates images from text — except using the language of chemistry. Our Enki™ platform is built on a foundation model trained on virtually every published, approved, and patented drug, allowing it to generate novel molecules optimised simultaneously for potency, selectivity, safety, and other properties. By solving this multi-parameter problem up front, Enki addresses the failure modes that derail most programs in the clinic — and does so roughly 100x more efficiently than the status quo.

As Handol puts it, the goal is for Enki to become the default first step for any company developing a small molecule drug.

Security that enables enterprise collaboration

The video also covers how AWS underpins Variational AI’s ability to work with major pharma partners. Each partner is served through a dedicated Virtual Private Cloud, keeping their proprietary data strictly separated from our internal compute — the architecture that makes secure collaboration at scale possible, including with partners like Merck.

A Canadian vision for health sovereignty

Handol also makes the case for Canada’s opportunity in pharma: the country has world-class AI talent and research depth, yet no homegrown non-generic pharmaceutical company in the global top 100. Variational AI sees its work as part of changing that.
